The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched the Meta-Supported Initiatives for Data Protection (M-SIDP), a two-year programme to strengthen privacy safeguards for internet users nationwide.
‎
‎The programme stems from a 2025 court-approved settlement after the Commission investigated Meta’s data processing practices in Nigeria.
‎
‎Under the agreement, Meta will fund and support the privacy measures.
‎
‎NDPC Head of Media, Itunu Dosekun, said the initiative targets four priority areas in line with Nigeria’s data protection laws.
‎
‎According to Dosekun, the programme will finance research and strengthen data governance frameworks. It will also build stronger safety features for digital platforms.
‎
‎She added that the initiative will provide advanced training for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and compliance organisations.
‎
‎It will also run nationwide public awareness campaigns on privacy rights, with special focus on children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups.
‎
‎Dosekun said while Meta is backing the rollout, the tech company does not have regulatory immunity. The NDPC retains full legal powers to monitor, investigate and regulate all data processing activities in Nigeria.
‎
‎The Commission said it will issue regular public updates on the programme’s progress and urged tech companies, businesses and citizens to support efforts to build a more secure and accountable digital economy.
