Four people have been killed after a Warri-Itakpe train derailed near Agbor, Delta State, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed.
NRC, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, said the accident occurred on Monday along the Warri-Itakpe Train Service corridor.
According to the corporation, four coaches capsized while one coach derailed. A total of 482 persons were on board – 442 passengers and 40 crew, security and service staff.
The statement said 24 serious injuries were recorded, with several others receiving treatment in Agbor medical facilities. One NRC staff suffered a traumatic limb injury but is in stable condition.
Among those on board were Senator Ede Dafinone representing Delta Central and former Delta SSG, Hon. Patrick Ukah.
Rescue operations, supported by Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, police and other agencies, were completed by 6:30 p.m.
“The Ministry and NRC extend deepest condolences to families of the deceased and pray for quick recovery of the injured,” the statement said.
NRC added that a full investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced and efforts are ongoing to account for all passengers.
