ZAMFARA — A member of the House of Representatives representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu, also known as Zannan Bungudu, has called on his constituents to arm themselves for self-defence against insecurity.
Security expert, Bakatsine, reported the development on his X handle on Monday.
According to the report, the lawmaker urged residents to withdraw their money and purchase weapons.
”I advise the people I represent to take out their money and buy guns for self-defence. Whether it’s an AK-47 or any other weapon, if they know where to get it, they should arm themselves and protect their communities,” Zubairu was quoted as saying.
The call comes amid persistent bandit attacks in Zamfara and other parts of the northwest, where communities have repeatedly reported killings, kidnappings and displacement.
The statement by an elected federal lawmaker openly urging civilians to acquire rifles raises fresh questions about public confidence in the state’s ability to provide security and the effectiveness of current security operations in the region.
As at press time, the Nigeria Police Force and the House of Representatives had not issued an official response to the lawmaker’s remarks.
