Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso as “known liars”, accusing them of misleading Nigerians with claims of political reform.
Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike faulted opposition parties for internal contradictions and lack of credibility in their just-concluded primaries.
He singled out the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, saying parties that portray themselves as “untainted” or “messianic” failed to conduct credible internal elections without controversy.
“NDC said we are the new face of democracy. ADC said this kind of party hasn’t been polluted one day, it’s a party that God just brought from the womb. What has happened? So dirty,” Wike said.
He added that disputes among opposition presidential aspirants during their congresses proved that the allegations they level against the ruling party also exist within their own structures.
“Nigerians have now known you’re all liars. They can’t be using us. They can’t be deceiving us,” the minister said.
Wike concluded that the older parties are better positioned to lead because they understand Nigeria’s political culture.
