GLASGOW – Team Nigeria delivered its best Commonwealth Games outing in recent years, finishing seventh on the overall medals table and emerging as the highest-ranked African nation at the 2026 Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Nigerian contingent won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to record a total of 24 medals during the 11-day multi-sport event held from July 23 to August 2.
The gold rush was powered by dominant performances in athletics, weightlifting and wrestling, with Nigeria’s track stars and grapplers accounting for the bulk of the podium finishes.
The performance places Nigeria ahead of all other African countries and marks a significant improvement from previous editions, underlining the impact of increased investment in sports development and athlete preparation.
Host nation Scotland finished sixth, just ahead of Nigeria, while New Zealand also edged the West African nation into seventh place on countback after both countries ended with 24 total medals.
Australia topped the medals table with 70 gold medals, followed by England, Canada, India, Scotland and New Zealand.
Officials of the Nigeria Olympic Committee described the result as “a proud moment for the nation” and credited the athletes, coaches and support staff for flying the Nigerian flag high in Glasgow.
