Nigeria, Cameroon Sign Defence MoU on Border, Maritime Security

Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence cooperation to secure their shared southern border and strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

‎The agreement was signed on Wednesday in Yaoundé by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), and Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Assomo.

‎The MoU followed two days of deliberations by defence and security experts from both countries.
‎
‎According to a statement by Musa’s media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in terrestrial and maritime domains. Key areas include intelligence sharing, operational coordination, logistics support, joint military training, personnel exchange, and collective response to emerging security threats.

‎Both countries also discussed the operationalisation of a Combined Maritime Joint Task Force as a platform for enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

‎Musa said the agreement provides a structured framework for military cooperation and operations between both countries to address common security concerns.
