The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.

‎The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, according to a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

‎Tunji-Ojo said June 12 remains a defining date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic governance.

‎He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance, and urged Nigerians to use the day for civic reflection, national unity, and renewed commitment to democratic values.
