The Nigeria Customs Service has clarified before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts that the ₦62.2 billion flagged as “under-remittance” for 2017 was levies collected on behalf of other agencies, not revenue due to the Federation Account.
The clarification was in response to an audit query from the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation dating back to 2019.
Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, explained that while most levies are remitted to the Federation Account, exceptions include levies on local production of wheat, textiles, wines, and others.
Customs management said it will meet soon with a sub-committee to reconcile all issues erroneously captured in the audit report.
