The Nigeria Customs Service has clarified before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts that the ₦62.2 billion flagged as “under-remittance” for 2017 was levies collected on behalf of other agencies, not revenue due to the Federation Account.

‎The clarification was in response to an audit query from the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation dating back to 2019.

‎Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, explained that while most levies are remitted to the Federation Account, exceptions include levies on local production of wheat, textiles, wines, and others.

‎Customs management said it will meet soon with a sub-committee to reconcile all issues erroneously captured in the audit report.
