Troops operating in the Tsamaye area, Sabon-Birni LGA of Sokoto State have arrested six suspected vandals and recovered a stolen electric transformer, according to security analyst Bakatsine on X.

‎Commendation to the troops for their vigilance and swift action in protecting critical public infrastructure, Bakatsine posted.
‎
‎Military sources disclosed that the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected vandals operating within communities in the area.
‎
‎The transformer recovered was suspected to have been stolen from a nearby community and has since been secured by the military pending further investigation.
‎
‎The suspects are currently in custody and being interrogated to ascertain the extent of their involvement, as well as identify other members of the vandalism network operating in the area.
‎
‎Transformer vandalism remains a major threat to Nigeria’s power sector. IBEDC recorded over 45 vandalism cases in 2024 alone.
‎
‎In April 2024, six suspects were apprehended for allegedly vandalising transformers and power substations in Damaturu, Yobe State.
‎
‎In Kogi, NSCDC also arrested three suspects in October 2024 for transformer vandalism and theft in Ankpa and Isanlu.
‎
‎The repercussions include: power outages that disrupt essential services, economic activities, and increase risks of electrocution and fire.
‎
‎Security agencies have warned criminal elements against acts of sabotage capable of undermining public services.
