The West African Examinations Council has warned schools and supervisors against extorting candidates during the ongoing WASSCE, describing the practice as illegal and a threat to exam integrity.
WAEC said it received reports of candidates being forced to pay unauthorised charges for script transportation, “welfare packages”, and so-called “co-operation fees”.
The council also accused some schools of demanding payment for KAPEK calculators already provided free by WAEC.
“WAEC condemns these practices as illegal, unethical and a direct threat to the integrity of the WASSCE,” the council said in a statement.
It warned that schools or supervisors found culpable risk sanctions including derecognition, blacklisting, prosecution and disciplinary action.
WAEC also disclosed that the exam faced operational challenges due to security issues and a road accident that killed three staff transporting exam materials.
It said emergency measures were activated to ensure exams held in affected areas.
