The Rivers State Police Command has ordered the arrest and detention of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers over allegations of extorting money from members of the public.
The Command said it took cognisance of a video and reports circulating on social media showing the officers allegedly collecting money from civilians while on duty.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, described the conduct as “inconsistent with the core values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.”
CP Adepoju has also ordered the immediate investigation of the allegation and directed that the officers be detained pending the outcome.
“Extortion, illegal collection of money and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the CP stated.
He added that the Command remains committed to ensuring officers conduct themselves in a manner that promotes public trust, accountability and respect for human rights.
The Commissioner assured residents that the investigation would be thorough, transparent and impartial. Any officer found culpable, he said, would face disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Act.
The Command urged members of the public to keep reporting cases of misconduct, corruption and abuse of office through its complaint channels.
