Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Bill, also known as the Kampala Convention Bill, into law.

‎The bill, sponsored by Kalu and six others, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s commitment to protecting IDPs’ rights and welfare, providing a framework for prevention, protection, and solutions.

‎With over 3.6 million Nigerians displaced due to insurgency, banditry, and natural disasters, Kalu said the law will provide support for those in IDP camps.

‎Kalu appreciated President Tinubu for assenting to the legislation, demonstrating commitment to restoring hope and dignity to displaced Nigerians.

‎He urged government institutions, civil society, and development partners to collaborate during implementation to realise the bill’s objectives.

‎”We must stand with displaced communities and provide pathways toward recovery, security, and renewed hope,” Kalu said, expressing delight that the bill he sponsored has been signed into law.
