The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced zonal readiness assessments of its operations ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the Southwest zone as the first point of engagement.
The Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, led the assessment during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, Electoral Officers and other officials in the zone.
Yakubu said the exercise was designed to enable the Commission’s leadership to personally ascertain the level of preparedness of its structures for the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027 for Presidential and National Assembly polls, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow.
He explained that the Commission adopted the zonal approach due to the limited time available before the polls, noting that it would allow for direct engagement with officials responsible for implementing Commission policies at state and local government levels.
“It is very critical for me to go and see for myself and be sure that we are physically, psychologically, materially and infrastructurally ready for the 2027 General Election,” Yakubu said.
The INEC Chairman described Electoral Officers as critical to the delivery of credible elections, adding that they serve as the link between decisions taken at the national level and their implementation at the grassroots.
He said the assessment would examine all components of the electoral process to identify gaps early and strengthen coordination in administration, staff management and logistics.
Yakubu assured that the Commission would continue to address every aspect of election preparation systematically to ensure a seamless general election in 2027.
