Residents and community stakeholders in Okon Aku, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, have raised concerns over the conduct of security and government officials during events that occurred between January 2 and 3, following tensions in the community.

‎In a statement issued in Umuahia on Sunday, Rev. Francis Nwaka, the signatory expressed worry over reported arrests, detentions and the handling of individuals during the period, calling for clarification and adherence to due process by relevant authorities.

‎According to the account, a community member, Mrs Grace Udensi Kalu, was reportedly taken into custody on January 2. It was alleged that her arrest did not follow standard police procedures, as she was not taken to a recognised police facility or formally informed of any charges at the time.

‎The statement called on security agencies to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention.

‎The following day, January 3, it was also alleged that another community figure, Hon. Ekea Udensi, was subjected to treatment described by witnesses as degrading while in custody.

‎Observers said the manner in which he was handled raised questions about respect for the dignity of individuals during security operations.

‎The statement further challenged explanations surrounding claims of arson in the community on January 2, noting that several residents maintained that no such incident occurred on that date.

‎According to these accounts, property destruction was only recorded on January 3, after confirmation of the death of Igwe Akuma Akwu, a traditional ruler in the area.

‎Community members stressed that the death of Igwe Akuma Akwu remains the central issue and called for a transparent and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding it.

‎They urged authorities to focus on fact-finding and justice, rather than actions that could heighten tensions or undermine public confidence.

‎Furthermore, the statement made an appeal for respect for the rule of law, protection of citizens’ rights, and accountability in the handling of security and governance matters in Okon Aku and similar communities.
