Benin’s Interior Minister Alassane Seidou on Sunday said the country’s armed forces thwarted an attempted coup.
Earlier, a group of soldiers, led by Lt-Col Pascal Tigri, had made a broadcast saying they had ousted President Patrice Talon and suspended the constitution.
But government officials led by Seidou, later said the army was regaining control and the situation was under control.
The the French embassy in Benin had earlier said gunshots were heard near the residence of the president in the main city of Cotonou, which is the seat of government.
Talon first took office in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021. The 67-year-old is due to step down at the end of his second term next year, the maximum allowed by the constitution.
