The Federal Government has announced that another 65 Nigerians will return home from South Africa today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, who disclosed this on her X handle, said the evacuation is being executed under a privately sponsored voluntary repatriation by the Nigeria Private Group of Business Friends to augment the Federal Government’s earlier efforts.
According to her, the second batch comprises 30 adults, 34 children, one infant, and one escorting mission official.
The returnees are from Lagos, Enugu, Kogi, Ogun, Imo, Oyo, Delta, Edo, Anambra, Osun, Benue, Abia and Kwara States.
Ojukwu stated that the evacuees are scheduled to depart the Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, at 3:30pm South African time and arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 8:45pm same day.
She noted that this follows the earlier return of 83 Nigerians last week under the same privately sponsored arrangement.
The Minister said the intervention comes amidst “unrelenting concerns over the safety and welfare of our Nationals in South Africa” occasioned by reports of continuing xenophobic incidents and protests calling for the deportation of foreign nationals.
“On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commends this group of individuals for complementing the Government’s efforts and for their proactive humanitarian interventions,” she said.
Ojukwu further appealed to state governments to assist returnees who abandoned livelihoods and properties, to help alleviate the trauma they have endured through relocation and resettlement support.
She concluded: “To our returnees, we say, ‘Welcome Home’.”
