The Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, ASERA, Mr Emeka Onyegbule, has assured electricity consumers across the state that the agency is committed to addressing their concerns and protecting their interests within the power sector.

‎Speaking on January 22, 2026, Mr Onyegbule said ASERA has been actively resolving complaints from electricity consumers and ensuring that operators treat customers fairly and in line with regulatory standards.

‎He explained that all electricity operators in Abia State, whether involved in power generation, distribution or transmission, are accountable to ASERA. According to him, facilities such as the Geometric Power Plant in Aba and the Independent Power Plant at Ariaria, among others, fall under the authority’s regulatory oversight.

‎Mr Onyegbule stressed that even companies that generate electricity independently are required to operate under ASERA’s supervision.
‎He noted that the authority is legally empowered to regulate all electricity undertakings across the entire state, without exception.

‎“As far as Abia State is concerned, our oversight function extends to every part of the state. There are no exemptions. Every electricity undertaking or operation within the confines of Abia State must report to ASERA,” he said.

‎The ASERA chief further emphasised the importance of licensing, stating that every electricity operator in the state must obtain and renew the appropriate licences. He disclosed that there are currently two electricity distribution companies operating in Abia State, Aba Power Limited Electricity Distribution Company in Aba and New Era in Umuahia.

‎He added that generation companies, including the Geometric Power Plant in Aba and the Independent Power Plant at Ariaria, obtained their licences from ASERA. Mr Onyegbule called on operators who are yet to obtain or renew their licences to do so promptly to avoid sanctions under the law.

‎On metering, he said ASERA is working to ensure the availability of meters to reduce the burden of estimated billing on consumers. He assured residents that more meters would be deployed than in the past and that customers who are due for meters would receive them within a reasonable timeframe.

‎Mr Onyegbule also encouraged the public to engage with ASERA through its official social media platforms, noting that the authority is available on X under the handle ASERA Abia and on LinkedIn as Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, among other platforms.
