The Federal Government has commenced the payment of ₦18 billion in outstanding severance benefits to 2,100 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited.
The payment follows approval by President Bola Tinubu to settle the longstanding financial obligations owed to the former workers.
According to officials, payments to beneficiaries in batches one to seven have been completed. The benefits for another 600 former workers in batches eight and nine are currently being finalized.
The government said the process involved verification, biometric capture, and validation of beneficiaries’ personal and banking information to ensure transparency and accuracy.
It added that a mop-up exercise will be conducted for eligible beneficiaries whose records could not be processed in the initial phase. This will include cases involving deceased beneficiaries, to be paid to their next of kin or estates.
The exercise is expected to bring relief to former Nigeria Airways workers who have waited for several years to receive their outstanding entitlements.
