LONDON – Chelsea have completed the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton for an undisclosed fee.

‎The 35-year-old joins the west London club as manager Xabi Alonso looks to add experience and Premier League know-how to his squad.

‎Welbeck scored 13 Premier League goals last season and 10 the campaign before, continuing to prove himself as a reliable forward at 35.

‎His arrival signals a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment policy. It is the first time in four years that the club has paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26. The last was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.

‎It is also the first time in two years that Chelsea have signed a player over the age of 30.

‎The England international becomes the latest physically-imposing, Premier League-experienced player to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.

‎Chelsea have already broken their transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, the highest fee ever paid for a British player. They have also brought in Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.
