A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted N200 million bail to African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation.

‎Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to produce two sureties. One must be a traditional ruler from his community in Ese Odo LGA, Ondo State. The second must own landed property in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

‎The judge directed that the prosecution counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Akinlolu Kehinde, must verify both sureties.

‎Sowore was also ordered to deposit his international passport with the deputy chief registrar of the court.

‎The court dismissed Sowore’s application seeking Justice Umar’s withdrawal from the trial over alleged bias.

‎The Department of State Services, DSS, is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in posts on X and Facebook.

‎Sowore was remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre on June 16 after Justice Umar revoked a previous bail granted on self-recognition in December 2024 and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

‎He was kept in custody last Tuesday pending the determination of a motion for stay of execution.

‎His lawyer, R.O. Adakole, pleaded for Sowore’s temporary release to retrieve his passport from the US Embassy in Lagos.

‎The judge adjourned the matter to July 6, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
