Tackling the menace of soil erosion and other environmental disasters in Abia requires a holistic approach, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, High Ikechi Emenike, has opined.
He noted that to effectively tackle these issues, requires that all resources, including International and national networks be deployed in order to rescue communities in the State ravaged by natural disasters.
High Chief Emenike who dropped the hint while addressing newsmen in Umuahia, noted that Abia cannot experience the recent situation in Turkey and Syria where earthquake claimed the lives of thousands of people, assuring that if elected, he will deploy huge resources in tackling environmental degradation.
In his word, “You saw how earthquake ravaged Turkey extending to Syria recently, in as much as a government may not have control over natural disasters, it’s effects can be reduced if people saddled with the responsibility act on time”.
” If I emerge Governor of Abia, we have communities, being ravaged by natural disasters and we will ensure that we collaborate with international agencies, to reduce at least the direct effect it would have had on the people if left unchecked”.
High Chief Emenike also pledged that his administration will plant at least three million trees annually, adding that this will assist in combating climate change, controlling erosion, as well as reduce urban runoff by storing water and breaking the force of rainfalls.
