Abia State Government says it may be tempted to apply more stringent measures in enforcing sanitation exercise in the state going forward.
The Government said this has become imperative due to the lackadaisical attitude exhibited by some Abians regarding the monthly sanitation exercise not minding the dangers dirty environment poses to their health.
Addressing newsmen after the February monthly Sanitation exercise on Saturday, The Commissioner, Ministry of Environment, Barr. Sam Nwogu, represented by The Director Environmental Health and Pollution Control, Mr Godson Aharanya, said it is believed that more stringent measures will compel people to participate in the sanitation exercise.
He frowned that people do not take proper care of their environment even as it has been established that 90 percent of the diseases people suffer come from poor hygiene while advising people to cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings clean to prevent communicable diseases.
On his part, the new Transition Committee Chairman, Umuahia North, Godson Nwankwo, said among places visited including : Isigate, Ama Hausa among others, he observed that some participated in the exercise while others did not.

He stated that in his admonition, he encouraged them to cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings clean as cleanliness is next to godliness, charging them to ensure that they key into the plans of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu towards ensuring that Abia is kept clean always.
