A retired Lieutenant-General in the Nigerian Army, Lamidi Adeosun (rtd), has charged the media in Nigeria not to eulogise the activities of insurgents as against the huge successes of men of the Nigerian Army.
Adeosun, who spoke in Umuahia on Wednesday during the 24th Social Media Influencers Seminar, organised by the Army Headquarters Department of Civil Military Affairs in conjunction with Security Affairs Limited on the theme, “The Nigerian Army’s Non-Kinetic Lines of Operation: Critical Roles of Social Media”, noted that despite several sacrifices rendered by the Army and other Security Agencies, their efforts at maintaining peace in the country is under-reported.
He stated that the media in Nigeria play pivotal role at ensuring the security of the nation, revealing that the media as the fourth estate of the realm, can set the country on the path of destruction if their stories are not properly cross-checked before shipping to the public.
Adeosun (rtd), charged media practitioners to believe in the unity of the country before shipping out information, stressing that they cannot afford to glorify the insurgents in their reports as this will arm them further while demoralizing the men of the Nigerian Army and other sister security agencies.
He urged media practitioners to approach the Army through different channels of communication, emphasizing that the Army has established various channels through which complaints can be entertained just as proper actions will be taken.
Adeosun (rtd), also advised the media to shun fake news as this places the country on a keg of gunpowder waiting to explode, insisting that the unity of the country is of utmost importance.
