The state of being free from danger, protection from, or resilience against potential harm or other unwanted coercive changes, caused by others by restraining their freedom to act is simply put, the meaning of security.
It can be further opined that being security conscious can be referred to being in a state to notice descrepancies in a situation of things in the environment. Thus, security patterns encapsulate security related problems and solution in certain contexts.
In Nigeria today, it is not in doubt that there is an inherent breach of security across the land, which has given rise to all manners of atrocious acts ranging from kidnapping, murder, theft, arson and many of such vices and it seems the government of the day at the centre is overwhelmed.
Because of the porous nature of the nation’s borders, there has been an influx of strange and foreign elements, with adulterated variations of different religious beliefs, some even said to be recruited by political power houses to cause mayhem and infiltrate other areas south and eastward, there has been an unprecedented rise of insecurity across board.
There has been other negative indices that is pointed towards causes of insecurity ranging from weak judicial system; where culprits have not been seen to have been adequately punished to serve as a deterrent to others, corruption; which is an obvious cankerworm that has brought the nation to it’s knees, poverty, a very powerful or even the most potent enabler of insecurity, unemployment, bad governance which stares all on the face amongst many others.
Be that as it may, the 7th Abia State House of Assembly has clearly shown that responding to citizen needs, advancing peace implementations and fostering greater citizen engagement in governance processes is the obvious way to go.
Still on the sphere of governance, this implies that the practice of ensuring that citizens are served helpfully and responsibly by government agencies and offices, which points to efficiency and effectiveness in good governance is the most admissible virtue of any people minded agency of government.
The Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji led 7th Abia Assembly, frowning at the rise of ugly security breaches, not peculiar to Abia State alone viz a viz calling for an interface with the various security formations domiciled in Abia State is advocating for good governance, solidified border security, economic development, leadership development, appropriate education, improvement of the criminal justice system and also in tandem to giving a listening ear that the matter of security, which in the Exclusive Legislative List of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria be given a look in, because of the call for State Police by a reasonable section of the populace. It cannot be argued in regard to the above that only the native knows the nook and cranny of his vicinity.
This stance by the Abia Assembly has via the above shown that effectiveness in governance oils processes which enables institutions produce results that meet the needs of society while making the best use of resources at their disposal.
Being empathetic with and to the various security agencies, there is an urgent need to equip them optimally work in tandem with modern security management system the world over. It is not enough for those who seek Presidential powers to splash dollars on delegates, who by themselves are also part of the enablers of insecurity in the country, while the areas where monies should be deployed is abandoned or mere lip service is paid.
In light of the above, more is still expected from the 7th Abia Assembly because of its comprising of independent minded progressives, having shown that responsive public governance requires responding efficiently and effectively to people’s needs, entailing the resolve to anchor policies, strategies, programs, interface with relevant authorities where applicable, activities and resources, administratively sagacious and knowledgeable individuals as seen with and in the Head of Legislative Services of in Institution in view, Dr John Pedro Irokansi , taking into account people’s expectations, with particular attention paid to local variations as well as ambition.
This is a scholarly piece intended to arouse collective participation engendered to increase security consciousness.
