As the globe marks the 2022 World Environment Day, the Town Planners of Nigeria, Abia State Chapter has highlighted the need to protect the ozone layer from further depletion.
The Chairman of the Institute in Abia State, Town Planner Stephen Nwazue, who gave the charge in a keynote address delivered on Friday to mark the celebration, added that it has become imperative to live sustainably in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes through policies and the choices made towards cleaner, greener lifestyles.
He said the planet human beings live in today is their only home, whose finite resources humanity must safeguard, stressing that the scorching sun from the Ozone Layer has further made it compulsory for humanity to do all within his ambit to protect from further depletion.
Tpl Nwazue noted that the environment is in danger due to the activities of man in the area of pollution as the major components of the environment such as the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, are all trapped with pollutants, stressing that the rising level of pollutants is destroying the normal environmental conditions.
He said it is important to safeguard the environment as it is one of the most important tools for man’s survival on planet earth, maintaining that the it nurtures human beings and helps them survive.
Tpl Nwazue, however gave some tips that can help protect the earth to include: reduction, re-use and recycling of materials, volunteering in cleaning up the environment, planting of trees, while advising people not to send chemicals into the water bodies.
He particularly charged school teachers, government agencies, Institutions, Individuals, NGOs among others to plant trees on this day. noting that this will go a very long way to protect the earth from further depletion just as he warned against deforestation – cutting down of tress without replacement.
The theme for 2022 World Environment Day is “Only One Earth”. It highlights the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes through policies and choices made towards cleaner, greener lifestyles.
