Reports claim that a notorious gang is behind the kidnap of at least 17 North American missionaries near Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
It was learnt that the five men, seven women and five children who were returning from a visit to an orphanage, were abducted on Saturday.
Meanwhile, officials claim they are being held by the 400 Mawozo gang, also blamed for the kidnap of Catholic clergy in April.
For the records, Haiti has one of the highest rates of kidnapping in the world, as powerful gangs exploit the lawless situation to make money from ransom payments.
